6:40 am. The lagoon turns to pearl.

Atoll is one of the few English words borrowed from Dhivehi, the language of these islands. It means a ring of reef holding a lagoon. Ours holds twelve villas, a house reef and very little else.

Pale sand flats and shallow water at first light, two figures walking across

8:00 am. Breakfast, then the lagoon.

Breakfast arrives on your deck, or floating in your pool. In-villa dining runs at any hour, and the steps lead straight down into the water.

10:00 am. The reef, sixty metres out.

Masks and fins wait on every deck, and the dive centre takes you deeper. From June to November manta rays gather in Hanifaru Bay, twenty minutes away by boat.

1:00 pm. A sandbank of your own.

A small sandbank in a shallow turquoise sea

A strip of white sand that comes and goes with the tide. We take you out with lunch and an umbrella, and collect you when you wave.

4:00 pm. Back to the villa.

5:30 pm. The spa over the water.

Two treatment rooms with glass floors, so the reef keeps you company while you rest.

6:10 pm. Sunset under sail.

The island's sailing boat leaves the jetty an hour before dark. Something cold to drink, and the sun going down behind the next island.

The overwater restaurant lit up at dusk

8:00 pm. Dinner at the Reef Table.

A candlelit table for two on the sand

Our overwater restaurant, lit by lanterns. Or a table for two on the sand, set while you watch the sun go down.
